Cardio Workouts

If you have ever worked out then your have probably done cardio workouts. Cardio workouts are the most popular of any workout or sport. Many people will be doing cardio workouts in their day to day life and not even know it. They can be done on machines at the gym, running down the street or playing your favourite sport that gets your heart rate up.

Cardio workouts can also be refered to as aerobic exercise or cardiovascular exercise. Most people use cardio for short. Cardio workouts use large muscles mostly your legs to workout and it’s main purpose is to make your lungs and heart stronger. Cardio workouts also have other benefits such as lowering blood pressure and burning calories for fat loss.

Where to do Cardio Workouts?

Outdoor Cardio Workouts

Outdoor cardio workouts can include running, swimming, biking, jogging, sprinting, skiing, hockey, soccer, football, bootcamp workouts, baseball, tennis, as well as most other sports that are played outside and have a high tempo.

Indoor Cardio Workouts

There are many indoor cardio workouts that you can do at the gym including, treadmills, stairclimbers, elliptical machines, rowing machines, spinning and stationary bikes. Most gyms will also have classes aerobics classes such as bootcamp, zumba, taebo, dance inspired, step classes, core strength, combat class and other classes. Some sports are also played inside during winter months.

Cardio Workouts at Home

There are also many cardio exercises that you can do at home without having to use expensive gym equipment that takes up half of your living room or that ends up getting used as a clothes hanger in a month.

Many of the home cardio programs won’t require any equipment and can be found online. There are many cardio dvd’s available or you can even try cardio workout books that will provide a variety of cardio exercises.

Types of Cardio Workouts

There are 3 types of cardio workouts which involve using different intensities during yoru workouts. These cardio workouts are regular cardio, high intensity cardio and high intensity interval training.

Regular Cardio

This type of cardio is what most people are doing when they say they did cardio at the gym. This includes biking, swimming, walking, treadmill, elliptical machines and anything that is low intensity. Most people will do these for around 30-60 minutes. If you can watch tv, read a book, orcaryon a conversation when you are doing cardio then it is regular cardio.

High Intensity Cardio

High intensity cardio is usually done for 30 minutes or less with a high level of intensity throughout the workout. High intensity workouts include running, rowing, hiking, and aerobics classes.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

The newest trend in cardio workouts is the high intensity interval training. This is cardio done at variable intensity levels. This is done by using high intensity for a set amount of time then going to lower intensity.

Example: Exercise for 1 minute at high intensity then low intensity for 30 seconds.

You may decide to sprint for high intensity then jog for your low intensity. The machines at the gym may even have programs that allow you to do high and low intensity bursts.

HIIT doesn’t have to be the same exercise for the low and high intensitite. You can also choose 2 different exercises that are of different intensities.
